Requirements for Completion of a Minor in Geology
at The University of Kansas


General Requirements

Students MUST work with a Dept. of Geology advisor to select coursework for a minor in geology.
Students must turn in a signed Geology Minor Advising form to the Dept. office before taking any 500-level courses in geology.
Forms are available in the Dept. office.

  1. Students must successfully complete at least 18 hours (and no more than 23 hours) of geology cources (prefix GEOL).
  2. At least 12 hours must be junior/senior level courses (numbered 300 and above).
  3. Students must earn at least a 2.0 GPA in the geology courses.
  4. Students majoring in geology may not minor in geology.


Specific Information

Required courses:

  • GEOL 101 Introduction to Geology (3 credit hours)
  • GEOL 103 Geology Laboratory (2 credit hours)

Recommended courses, as required for upper division courses:
  • GEOL 311 Mineralogy and Chemistry of the Earth
  • GEOL 331 Sedimentology and Surface Processes

Any geology courses numbered 300 and above will count toward a geology minor. Check with an advisor about which courses are offered regularly and which you should take as soon as they are offered because they are not offered regularly.

Below are suggestions for courses that will fulfill the requirements for a minor in geology. These lists are not requirements, but suggestions for those seeking guidelines to reasonable groups of courses that might be appropriate for those with specific interests.
