Research Interests - Petrology and Geochemistry

* Geochemistry, esp. Rare Earth Elements (REE)
* Analytical Geochemistry

My main research interests are the REE-characterists of different volcanic and metamorphic rocks. Together with other trace elements the REE can be used as tools to decipher the geotectonic environment of the formation and evolution of these rocks. I am also working on the distribution of REE between clinopyroxene and garnet in mantle peridotites of different localities. Garnet peridotite xenoliths provide the deepest insights into the mantle. By investigating mantle peridotites we can track mantle composition and mantle fertility through time. Trace elements are particularly important in the interpretation of mantle history, especially for crystallisation and melting processes. However, discrepancies exist between experimental data and those collected from natural rocks and minerals. My aim is to resolve these and determine trace element partitioning within thin sections by beam techniques. Textural evidence, detailed petrography and in-situ analytical methods are used to understand the several factors possibly controlling trace element behaviour in garnet peridotites of different age, P-T history, whole rock composition and tectonic environment.

Minerals of interest were measured with a secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS, upgraded Cameca 3f at the Max Pianck-Institut in Mainz, Department of Cosmochemistry). Major element composition was measured in detail by the Jeol 8900RL electron microprobe at the Institut für Geowissenschaften, Universität Mainz.
The spatial resolution of the ion beam technique is adequate to detect REE-variations within single grains. By measuring selected REE-isotopes it is possible to evaluate the overall REE-pattern of grt and cpx, while reducing the analysis time. Isotopic interferences can thus be avoided and corrections are limited. This method is also used to control the trace element variation in different grains because only unzoned grains indicating equilibrium should be used to calculate REE-distribution coefficients.

For different type of analytical problems I have been working with the following analytical instruments:

LA-ICP-MS
ICP-OES (mainly REE and relevant elements for cosmogenic nuclide studies)
XRF (Philips PW 1480)
HPLC for REE
ion chromatography for separation of REE
Electron Microprobe (Cameca Camebax, Jeol JXA-8900RL)
Ion microprobe (modified Cameca 3f, trace elements, especially REE)
wet chemistry
radiogenic isotopes (40Ar/39Ar- and K/Ar-dating)
