In particular, I'm interested in combining structural geology with (U-Th)/He, fission track and 40 Ar/39Ar low-temperature thermochronology to elucidate the spatial and temporal distribution of deformation in continental rifting, orogen-parallel extension and lateral extrusion tectonics, and the timing and strain distribution of intraplate deformation and strain partitioning in extensional and contractile fault systems. These geochronological and thermochronological methods are a powerful way to more comprehensively understand the complex interplay of deformation, magmatism, metamorphism, and sedimentary processes through time. I'm currently involved in several KU and collaborative projects in the fields of regional tectonics and thermochronology, investigating the temporal and thermal aspects of deformation in extensional and contractional geodynamic settings. For the past six years I have studied the spatial and temporal distribution and magnitude of extensional and strike-slip faulting in the northern Basin and Range province, the northern Gulf of California, and Sonora. One of the key aspects of this research is the temporal differentiation of strain partitioning within the diffuse North America-Pacific plate boundary. A more recent focus of my research is the tectonics of the Middle East, especially the continent-continent collision in northern and southern Iran, and the timing and structural configuration of initial rifting along the margins of the Red Sea in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. As part of a larger collaborative effort with UCLA and Univ. Tehran, we have investigated the incipient continental collision in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran and its implications for ultra-fast subsidence in the south Caspian basin, Tertiary intra-arc rifting in north-central Iran, and dating of salt diapirism in the Zagros fold-thrust belt north of the Strait of Hormoz. A new project is trying to investigate the timing of east-west extension and crustal extrusion in southern Tibet. The Neogene geodynamics of the Tibetan-Himalayan orogenic belt, and the Tibetan Plateau in particular, is central to the understanding of how plateaus form and collapse and how continental crust deforms. In addition, I'm currently involved in several collaborations such as (1) the quantification of late Tertiary denudation of the Colorado Plateau, (2) Rifting in the Sea of Ochotsk, Siberia, (3) Timing and magnitude of deformation within thin- and thick-skinned Andean fold-thrust belts in Bolivia and northern Argentina, and (4) 3-D geometry of isotherms in an actively deforming out-of-sequence basement thrust block in the western Alps, Mt. Blanc. Etc. Current Students T.J.
