POSITION TITLE: Assistant Professor of Geology
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Geology at the University of Kansas seeks applications for a 9-month, tenure-track faculty member in the field of geochronology. We are seeking an individual with expertise in tectonic or petrological applications of high to moderate temperature geochronology and analytical methods (e.g., TIMS, MC-ICP-MS, etc.) who will complement existing programs in tectonics, petrology, and geo- and thermochronology. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an externally funded research program, direct graduate students, and participate in teaching at graduate and undergraduate levels, including courses in the fields of geochronology, petrology, and isotope geochemistry. STARTING DATE: August 15, 2007, or later; position and starting date are dependent on availability of funds. Position is contingent on budgetary approval.
APPOINTMENT: This is a tenure-track, 9-month, academic-year appointment (mid-August to mid-May).
SALARY: 9-month salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
DUTIES:
Teach geochronology and/or petrology courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels
Participate in teaching mineralogy, geochemistry, and appropriate introductory and service courses
Develop and conduct an active research program, publishing in appropriate journals
Seek and obtain external funding for the research program
Supervise undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. students research
Provide service to the department, university, profession, and society.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D. degree in geology or closely related field
Ability to teach geochronology, petrology, and isotope geochemistry
Ability to establish an active externally funded research program in geochronology
Effective communication skills
Eligibility to work in the U.S. prior to the starting date of the position
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Research beyond the Ph.D., publication in refereed journals, and receipt of external funding
Demonstrated ability and competence in teaching
Ability to teach field camp
Broad research program with research interests complementary to those of faculty of the University of Kansas Department of Geology
Contribution to a climate of diversity in the College of Liberal Art and Sciences, incl. diversity of scholarly approaches
