Position Announcement
Assistant Professor of Glaciology
The Department of Geology
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Geology and the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) at the University of Kansas seek applications for an academic-year, tenure-track faculty position in the field of glaciology expected to begin August 18, 2007. We seek an outstanding colleague whose research addresses fundamental problems related to glaciology and the motion of glacial ice, who will participate in the CReSIS research mission, and who will complement existing programs in behavior of ice sheets, rates of geological processes, and climate change. Individuals with expertise in numerical modeling of ice sheets, remote sensing of ice sheets, landscape evolution, cosmogenic nuclide dating, and ocean-ice-atmosphere modeling are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an externally funded research program, direct graduate students, and participate in teaching graduate and undergraduate students, including courses in glaciology. Refer to
geo.ku.edu and links for additional information about the department and the University of Kansas. This faculty position will directly support the mission of CReSIS –
to understand and predict the role of polar ice sheets in sea-level change. CReSIS is an NSF-funded Science and Technology Center established in 2005 – see
cresis.ku.edu for additional description of that effort. The academic affiliation is expected to be with the Department of Geology, but appointment in a different academic department would be possible. The successful candidate for the position should be eligible to work in the U. S. prior to the start date of the position.
DUTIES:
- Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in glaciology, numerical modeling, or geomorphology and advanced seminars in area of expertise
- Teach appropriate introductory and service courses
- Develop and conduct an active research program in association with the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets, publishing in appropriate journals
- Seek and obtain external funding for the research program
- Supervise undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. students’ research
- Provide service to the department, university, profession, and society.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ph.D. or terminal degree in geology or a related field expected by the start date of appointment.
- Ability to establish an active externally funded research program in glaciology, as evidenced by work history, c.v., and letters of reference.
- Research interests that strengthen the mission of the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets, as evidenced by cover letter.
- Effective communication skills, as evidenced by letter of application and statement of teaching and research interests.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Expertise in numerical modeling, landscape evolution, cosmogenic nuclide dating, or remote sensing.
- Experience incorporating remote sensing measurements into numerical models.
- Research beyond the Ph.D., publication in refereed journals, and receipt of external funding.
- Demonstrated ability and competence in teaching.
- Research interests complementary to those of faculty of the University of Kansas Department of Geology.
- Ability to participate in the University of Kansas Department of Geology field-oriented teaching program.
- A candidate who would contribute to the climate of diversity in the College, including a diversity of scholarly approaches.
