POSITION TITLE: Assistant Professor of Geology - Process Carbonate Sedimentology

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Geology at the University of Kansas seeks applications for an academic year, tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in the field of process carbonate sedimentology expected to begin August 18, 2008. We seek an outstanding colleague who studies carbonate depositional processes in marine environments to better understand environmental change. We welcome candidates who combine traditional field and laboratory approaches and those that integrate quantitative or modern analytical techniques to the study of carbonate systems. Candidates whose research is applicable to carbon cycling and energy resources are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an externally funded research program, direct graduate students, and participate in teaching graduate and undergraduate students. S. prior to the start date of the position.

DUTIES:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses and advanced seminars in their area of expertise.
  • Teach appropriate introductory and service courses in the Department of Geology.
  • Develop and conduct an active research program, publishing in appropriate journals.
  • Seek and obtain external funding for the research program.
  • Supervise undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. students’ research.
  • Provide service to the department, university, profession, and society.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in geology or a related field expected by the start date of appointment.
  • Ability to establish an active externally funded research program carbonate sedimentology as evidenced by work history, curriculum vitae, and letters of reference.
  • Active research on carbonate depositional processes including model generation as evidenced by cover letter, statement of research interests, and letters of reference.
  • Record of publication as evidenced by curriculum vitae.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by cover letter, statements of research and teaching interests, and letters of reference.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with modern and ancient carbonate systems.
  • Experience with traditional field and laboratory based research.
  • Experience with modern analytical techniques (e.g. remote sensing, GIS)
  • Demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary research.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate quantitative process based models.
  • Published research beyond the Ph.D.
  • Receipt of external funding
  • Demonstrated competence in teaching
  • Research interests complementary to those of faculty members of the University of Kansas Department of Geology
  • A candidate who will contribute to the climate of diversity in the College, including diversity of scholarly approaches.
