Student Opportunity - Summer 2008
Earthquake Recording Station Siting Project
The Department of Geology
EarthScope (
EarthScope.org), funded by the National Science Foundation, is installing an earthquake recording observatory (USArray) across the U.S. The array consists of 400 seismic stations spaced about 70 km apart that is rolling across the nation in a leap-frog fashion over the next decade. The University of Kansas Department of Geology is participating in this national project by providing site reconnaissance for future earthquake recording stations. More than 325 stations in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas will be identified during Summer 2008. The Department of Geology is seeking qualified and enthusiastic students to conduct site reconnaissance in Kansas where approximately 47 stations will be installed.
Within the assigned area, each two-person team will (1) use computer-based tools to identify potential seismograph sites, (2) conduct field investigations to confirm the suitability of potential sites, and (3) prepare reconnaissance reports documenting the selected site. Approximately 23 sites will be assigned to each team. An introductory workshop will be held May 19-22, 2008, (venue to be announced at a later date) for all siting teams and faculty advisors that will be participating in the 2008 Earthquake Recording Station Siting Project in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas.
Junior and senior undergraduate or first- and second-year graduate students with an interest in geoscience/Earth science or Geographic Information Systems are invited to apply. Students will receive a weekly stipend and travel expenses and will be provided equipment including laptops, cameras, and GPS units to use during the 10-week project.
